The ABCs of Freelancing:

Publishing Class (On ZOOM)

Dates: 4 Wednesdays, March 5 - 26

Time: 7 - 9pm
Instructor: Alan Chazaro
Ages: Adult
Genre: Publishing
Price: $275

What's it like to be your own boss and report your own stories for large, public platforms? In this course, journalist Alan Chazaro shares his experiences, insights, tips and tool kit as a freelance writer.

From learning how to pitch editors, keeping track of your payments, and calibrating your voice as a freelance writer, students will walk away with a sense of how to enter the world of journalism with a sense of independence and clarity.

To do that, we will read examples of excellent freelance journalism, practice writing our own pitches, and begin to draft a freelance story that writers can potentially send out for publication.

About the Instructor:

Alan Chazaro is the author of This Is Not a Frank Ocean Cover Album (Black Lawrence Press, 2019), Piñata Theory (Black Lawrence Press, 2020) and Notes from the Eastern Span of the Bay Bridge (Ghost City Press, 2021). He is a graduate of June Jordan’s Poetry for the People program at UC Berkeley and a former Lawrence Ferlinghetti Poetry Fellow at the University of San Francisco. His work can be found in KQED, NPR, GQ, LA Times, SLAM, The Guardian, SF Chronicle, and more. He currently writes as a freelancer living in southeastern Mexico.
