It's All About Transitions:
Fiction Class (In Person at Left Margin LIT)
Date: 1 Saturday, April 5
Time: 10am - 3pm (with one-hour lunch break)
Instructor: Evgeniya Dame
Ages: Adult
Genre: Fiction
Price: $175
“You’re only as good as your transitions,” says author Weike Wang. In this highly interactive class we’ll put that statement to the test.
First of all, what are transitions? We’ll go beyond the college definitions (hint: it’s not just 'furthermore') to discover an array of techniques, from repetition to point of view shifts, that help writers bridge ideas, time periods, perspectives, and more.
Armed with readings by Priscilla Long, Tobias Wolff, Deborah Levy, Sylvia Plath and others, we’ll discuss how transitions can solve some of the most common issues in fiction: from introducing backstory and interiority to shifting point of view and covering vast passages of time.
A range of writing prompts will leave participants with new ideas, revision strategies, and a practical understanding of how transitions can transform one’s creative work.
